The winner will be chosen by the chairperson of the Department of English. The Abernathy Scholarship is awarded each spring to a student who writes the best article, story, play, or poem with religious overtones. Abernathy's purpose for this award was to enrich religious thought through the discipline of literature. She won several awards for fiction and poetry throughout her life. Abernathy was a retired high school English teacher and social worker. This scholarship was established by Lea Abernathy, a 1935 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University.
